Saying Goodbye to the Year No One Saw Coming

Reflecting on a year that didn’t turn out as planned (and which quickly overstayed its welcome)

How will you remember 2020?

The pandemic? Polarizing politics? Zoom calls and curbside pickups?

However you experienced this year, I’m certain it didn’t turn out as you planned. 2020 typically refers to perfect vision, but I daresay no one saw this coming.

Today, Compass will close down for a few days to allow our team to take a break from their work and to celebrate Christmas with their family and friends.

We’ve been working remotely for about nine months now, so the change of scenery will be minimal. But the change of pace will be a welcome relief. This past year we’ve been challenged to adapt to new working conditions, learn new technologies and overcome many unpredictable hurdles. My colleagues have done so ably and with a sense of resolve and good humour. Bravo! Thanks, everyone! Your Christmas break is well deserved.

Thank you to our clients too for staying positive and choosing to see opportunity where many only saw crisis. Thank you for choosing courage over fear. Thank you for your tenacity and creativity. You’re an inspiration to us and we’re honoured to play a part in your success.

Please take a moment to watch our short video and appreciate all the great brands our team has supported this year. On behalf of all of us here at Compass, let me say “thank you!” for trusting us with your stories.

Thank you to our vendors and suppliers too for adjusting quickly to meet the new and quickly changing rules of doing business. Your extra efforts allowed us to keep working and remain productive. Thank you!

When the first measures against COVID-19 were taken in March, do you remember the concern you had for your teams and your customers? Remember how you suddenly checked how much cash you had on hand? Remember how you upped your leadership, ramped up your marketing and took extra measures to keep people safe? Remember how you evaluated your products and services and challenged yourselves to offer even more value to your clients?

Remember that? Keep all of that going into 2021. Your customers, your team, and your company will be better off because of it.

It’s incredible what a crisis can do to heighten our awareness, sharpen our perspective and reveal what’s important in our lives. If 2020 has made us more compassionate leaders, keener managers and more diligent workers... Then we have a lot to be thankful for.

We’re excited to see what you’ll accomplish in the new year, but first...

Have a restful and blessed Christmas!

Sincerely,

Jason Bouwman
